Retainers After Braces

After you've worn your braces for the allotted time, you now have to maintain your new and improved smile. For the next five years, you will have to continue wearing a retainer. This will have to be worn for full-time for six weeks straight, and only be removed when you are eating meals and consuming drinks other than water. Once the six weeks are up, you will only have to wear your retainer at night.

Retainers are plastic and resemble your set of teeth. It is a special mold that is used to form the shape of your actual teeth, so to keep them in their current state. It's important that you take special care of your retainer, so that it doesn't get lost or broken. Some tips include:

  • Never leave your retainer around pets, especially dogs
  • Never leave your retainer in a hot car, it could end up melting
  • Don't wrap your retainer in a napkin or paper towel, it could end up thrown away accidentally
  • When not in your mouth, keep your retainer inside of its case
  • Clean the retainer using dawn dish soap, toothpaste or retainer cleaner
  • Don't use hot water when cleaning your retainer, only use cold or warm water

If you have been having issues with your wisdom teeth, your dentist will X-ray your mouth to see when they can be pulled. Once removed, you still have to continue wearing your retainer. During your consultation for wisdom tooth removal, your dentist will go over the procedure and explain what type of sedatives or anesthesia will be used. It's a good idea to wear a short sleeve shirt or one you can easily roll up, since you will have an IV in your arm. Before the procedure, you won't be able to eat or drink for six hours.
