Traditional braces are often the preferred option for addressing misaligned teeth. The brackets and other orthodontic components create a functional system capable of maintaining the tension applied during routine adjustments.
If a component is bent, damaged or comes loose, it could harm your mouth as well as alter the tension needed to gradually correct your misaligned teeth.
Here at Shehee & Callahan Family Orthodontics our orthodontist notes that there are some simple things you can do to maintain the structural integrity your braces as well as the general health of your teeth.
It’s best to avoid overly sticky and very hard foods as they could damage or bend a braces component. The force and suction might also be able to pull a bracket or spacer out of its intended position.
If any part of your braces has been compromised in any way, you need to have it examined and repaired as soon as possible by Dr. Ed Shehee or Dr. Chad Callahan. The longer you delay the more you put your mouth at risk for harm and other unnecessary complications.
Maintaining good oral hygiene habits is also very important. You need to remember to brush your teeth each morning and night with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. It’s also important to floss your teeth at least once each day.
