Are you an athlete who has braces? If so, our orthodontists, Drs. Shehee and Callahan, strongly encourages you to care for your smile and braces while you practice and play. That way you can maintain a top-notch oral health and orthodontic appliance. To help you do so, they encourage you to do the following things:
-Wear a mouthguard: A mouthguard is a strong and resilient appliance that covers your teeth and braces and protects them when elbows, knees, heads, and other hard objects forcefully hit your mouth. This mouthguard can help you avoid dental and orthodontic emergencies, like knocked-out teeth, broken teeth, and damaged braces.
-Avoid sports drinks: Sports drinks contain high amounts of sugar, which means that when you drink them, you increase your chances of developing tooth decay. So, it’s best to avoid drinking sports drinks and drink water instead.
-Attend your adjustment appointments: Your adjustment appointments are very important when staying on track toward your perfect smile. They are also helpful when your braces have been damaged or when they have suffered wear and tear. These appointments can help us fix your appliance if it’s needed.
