Our orthodontist recently recommended that you have braces in Pensacola, Florida. Did you know that there are certain things that you can do to protect your braces? Dr. Shehee, Dr. Callahan and our team are happy to give you tips to help you keep your braces in tip top shape.

Foods to Avoid
When your braces are placed, our orthodontists will give you a list of foods to avoid for the duration of treatment. In general, you should avoid any food that is sticky, chewy, or hard. Sticky foods include caramel and gummy candy. These are likely to get stuck in your braces. Crunchy food like popcorn or hard pretzels can become lodged in the braces. They can even make parts of your braces snap when you bite them.

Habits to Avoid
Be careful about your oral habits while wearing braces. Biting nails or pens can damage your braces very easily. Eating ice can also cause trouble.

When Accidents Happen
Even if you are careful with your braces, accidents can happen. For instance, an injury to the face can cause a bracket or wire to become loose or broken. If this happens, call Shehee & Callahan Family Orthodontics as soon as possible to schedule an appointment. You can use orthodontic wax to temporarily reattach a loose bracket or to cover the end of a wire that is sticking out. This can protect your teeth, mouth, and the inside of your cheeks until you can visit us.
