Your orthodontic treatment has been planned and it’s almost time for your braces to be placed by Dr. Shehee and Dr. Callahan. There are a few things that you can do to prepare yourself for this important step in your journey to a straight smile.
Clean Your Teeth Thoroughly
If your teeth are not clean enough when you come in to get your braces placed, our orthodontists will clean them with a special polishing paste. This will allow the braces to be properly cemented in place. You may want to schedule a professional dental cleaning appointment a few days before you are scheduled to have your braces placed so that your teeth will be plaque free. Then be sure to brush and floss before your appointment so that your appointment can be more efficient.
Discuss Your Braces
Before your braces are placed, talk with our orthodontists and make sure that you understand what type of braces are being used. Ask any questions that you need to so that you fully understand your orthodontic treatment. There are usually three types of braces:
– Braces with brackets that are bonded to the front of the teeth. These are the most typical choice for children.
– Braces with brackets that are bonded to the back of the teeth. These are more discrete and aesthetic.
– Metal bands that are wrapped around the teeth. These are used instead of brackets.
Be Prepared for Some Discomfort
After your braces are placed, you can expect some level of discomfort. Your teeth may be sensitive at first. Eat soft foods, like soup and pasta, for the first few days. Over-the-counter pain medicine can also help. Your sensitivity should go away after a few days.
